The New Sincerity is actually my comics' guiding principle!

(Yes, it really happened.)

...

Folks, I ain't gonna lie – this winter wasn't especially kind to me. But now the sun is out (occasionally, but hey) and I ride my bike all over town and go on hikes in the mountains and drink cheap beer with sweet friends, and it is hard not to feel really good about everything ever. What I'm saying is: I felt like life owed me something this spring, something to really convince me that things were going my way again.

And then! Last month! I won a scholarship to attend MaxFunCon! Jesse Thorn called me to tell me and I squealed at him, and then I hung up the phone and excitedly ran tiny laps around our tiny apartment's tiny living room while squealing at the horrified cat. Basically, I put together a little essay about how I've had this persistent existential crisis concerning my place in the world ever since that surreal time I got a couple of multinational oil companies into a bidding war over me and then I panicked and put a stop to that whole awful let's-move-to-Texas idea. And so this feels like one big vote of confidence from the universe or whatever, and I can hardly tell you how grateful and happy I am.

And now I have a new pad of Bristol board, and a new sewing machine that will magically fill my closet with summer dresses, and a new tray of tomato seedlings that already smell like summer itself, and a sweet bike even the cranky guy at the bike store loves, and a pink fluffy skirt everyone loves, and oh, I am feeling very YES about life these days.

My sister swears she has seen crows smoking a cigarette, laughing at her and saying her name. Not at the same time, of course! That would be silly!

HA HA HA. Oh, man. The mental image of a crow smoking a cigarette is a whole new level of awesome hilarity.

The other two, though. That is some borderline schizophrenia right there.

SMOKING CROWS! Yes!

Yay, congrats on the scholarship! And also, I love this comic. It reminds me of back when I was a runner and the squirrels would throw nuts at my head. Squirrels are mean little buggers.

God, you aren't kidding. We used to have a hammock in the backyard, and there was a squirrel who KNEW when I had fallen asleep, and in that instant where I had crossed the line from consciousness into confused half-sleep, it would drop things onto my head, just to watch me panic. Which is actually the kind of thing I would do, now that I think about it. I mean, not even as a squirrel. As a human, too.

I KNOW, RIGHT?

The sun's out again today! I love everything.

P.S. I am gonna have to nerd out with you about quilting, at some point.

It has happened approximately 6 times that I have gone out into my backyard and found a peanut. It might be on the picnic table or just lying on the ground. My best hypothesis is that crows find them at the Elks club patio about 1/4 mile from here, pick them up and then drop them on their flyover. Either that, or they are trying to feed us.

I don't even know HOW HE DID THAT. I am actually kind of terrified of the idea of birds throwing things, to be honest. Vengeful little things ought not to have sharp, tiny beaks.

Yay!!

This all sounds so wonderful. I want to go biking around Seattle in the springtime too!

Of course today, it is intermittently pouring, and I managed to spill a cup of coffee all over myself in a 40 mph headwind.

I drove to work today.

I had totally forgotten about that moving to Texas thing!

I want to sew summer dresses too. You shall inspire me! Let's have lunch on one of your days off soon and talk sewing!

Haha, yeah. That whole Texas business was a weird dream, wasn't it? Jeez, I can't believe I ever felt like that would be a good thing for me, but it feels light years behind me now.

I got a PILE of sewing patterns over the last couple of weeks — Simplicity patterns are on sale for 99-cents at Joann in Ballard right now! I think it's only through tomorrow too, so you should stop by and pick up a handful if you're back from AZ! I'm working on a couple of "easy" skirt patterns right now (i.e. not that easy), so eventually I should be able to actually be of some help.

Random

[begin strange logic]

You're interesting and fun. You live in Seattle. I live in LA. We can't hang out.

My sister is interesting and fun. You live in Seattle. She lives in Seattle. You two should hang out.

[/end strange logic]

She also has an amazing Sully monster:

Re: Random

omg, that dog! You siblings and your adorable pets!

I have actually been thinking about how much I need some lady friends around here! All my friends are dudes, more or less.

I just sent you a facebook friend suggestion. She is visiting CA this week--I'll explain my strange logic to her.

I thought of a comic idea that I wanted to tell you, but now I forgot it. Something about chickens to go with the animals-only theme, but then I got the Denny's Superbowl ad stuck in my head and I forgot my idea.

This probably wasn't helpful at all, was it?

[info]rosiedee

April 6 2010, 23:42:42 UTC 2 years ago

No, but I really enjoyed the screaming chickens anyway!
